When does a mail land in the spam folder?

Spam filters combine hundreds of signals: auth records, reputation, content, frequency. The Mandokit Spam Test reproduces the most important heuristics from SpamAssassin, Gmail Postmaster and Microsoft SNDS and tells you what’s problematic about your mail — before you hit Send.

Why test your mail before sending?

Spam filters get more aggressive every quarter. What landed two years ago is junk today:

  • Subject filters. Certain words in the subject (free!!, FREE, $$$) are instant triggers.
  • HTML-to-text. Pure HTML mails without a plaintext variant lose points.
  • Image ratio. Over 60% image content = classic spam pattern.
  • Missing auth. No SPF/DKIM/DMARC = straight to junk on Gmail.

Step-by-step: Spam Test in 4 steps

  1. 1
    Paste the mail
Subject + plaintext + HTML into the tool, or send a test mail to our probe address.
  2. 2
    Run the test
We run 25+ heuristics — content, auth, sender-domain reputation.
  3. 3
    Read the score
0 = clean, 5+ = spam suspect, 10+ = guaranteed junk folder. Plus concrete issues.
  4. 4
    Fix & re-test
Each recommendation as a checkbox. Run it again and watch the score drop.

What gets checked?

We combine SpamAssassin rules with our own checks for modern inbox providers.

GLOSSARY

Spam-filter vocabulary

SpamAssassin
Open-source spam filter whose rules are still the standard vocabulary for spam scoring.
Spam score
Numeric value. 5+ = suspect, 10+ = guaranteed spam.
Postmaster
Reporting tool from Gmail/Microsoft for high-volume senders.
DNSBL
DNS-based blacklist. Sender IP/domain on it = instant spam.
Greylisting
Mail server rejects on the first attempt, accepts on the second.
Tarpit
Server replies extremely slowly on purpose to slow spammers down.
Reputation score
Aggregate value across IP, domain, content history.
Honeypot
Addresses that exist only to catch spammers.
WHO USES IT

Who tests spam scores?

Email marketers
Score-check before every newsletter send.
Sales ops
Iterate on cold-outreach templates until score ≤ 2.
Transactional
Welcome mails, invoices, reset mails — a single junk classification kills conversions.
Agencies
Add a QA step before sending on behalf of clients.
Domain switch
After migration, test that all auth records are correctly set up.
FAQ

FAQ for Email Spam Test

Do I need a real email for the test?
Either paste subject + body, or send a test mail to our probe address — the latter realistically tests auth records too.
What does a score of 4 mean?
Borderline. Some filters let it through, others mark as junk. Above 5 is spam suspect.
Which filters are simulated?
SpamAssassin (weighted rules), Gmail-style content heuristics, Microsoft filter logic.
Will my mail be stored?
No. We analyse in-memory and forget immediately.
How often should I test?
On every template change, at minimum once per quarter.
Does this help against greylisting?
Greylisting is not a spam score. We flag it separately.
